The most important quality in talented rap artists today is versatility. We are now in a time where rap artists from different regions are supporting each other by performing guest appearances, collaboration albums, and remixes of ‘radio-friendly’ singles. With this in mind, in comes a new breed of rapper whose broad range of vocal ability combined with his quality production, recording, and engineering backgrounds make him a relentless force to be reckoned with. Ladies and gentlemen, introducing the future of rap music as we know it, Cleveland, Ohio’s own Phoenix Jones. Ever since Phoenix first emerged on the scene (circa ’94), he has been a dominant figure in the Northeast, Ohio soundstage. After earning first place at his high school talent show (Shaker Heights Red and White Revue,1996), Phoenix knew it was his destiny to become a legendary rap icon. While most of his early work displayed the gritty and untamed sound that New York was making famous, his latest solo E.P., Prince Of Thieves, and vast mixtape appearances have shown the world that Phoenix is able to turn his game up a notch and is ready to take a shot at the industry’s upper echelon. Dubbed ‘ One of the BEST local releases of the year’ (by Michael Oatman, Cleveland Free Times Magazine), Prince Of Thieves has evoked a new found respect for Cleveland artists as a whole. The best thing about the project is that a majority of Prince was recorded, produced and engineered by Phoenix himself. Following in the footsteps of his luminaries, Jay-Z, and The Genius/GZA of the Wu-Tang Clan, Phoenix saw his lyrical standards evolve into a ‘street psychologist’, a emcee who balances the grey area between backpack and thug gracefully. And this was only the beginning….. After a chance listening, DJ G-Spot (Justo’s Midwest DJ of the Year 2004, Cleveland Scene Magazine DJ of the Year 2003) was hooked on the talent of this young and versatile artist. Phoenix first feature on the internationally known DJ’s mixtape series was ‘Hip Hop Is My Hoe’ from his Prince of Thieves E.P. Since then, the two have collaborated on 12 consecutive mixtape appearances, including his latest, Back From Paradise (2004 RPM Mixshow Power Summit Edition). Along with DJ G-Spot, Joey Fingaz, DJ Centipede, DJ 011, DJ Uncut, DJ Bone, DJ Kut Nyce (Cleveland’s Kool Mixx Champion), DJ Spoonie Tee, DJ Steady Pace and Detroit’s DJ Babe have all showcased Phoenix’s talents behind the mic and behind the boards. Knowing that one region could never contain such talent, Phoenix has already managed to gain subtantial airplay not only in his hometown (1300AM WERE) but also in other markets such as Atlanta (88.5 WRAS) and Buffalo (93.7WBLK). And to top it off, Phoenix (with help from local producer extrordinaire, Killah Beats) created a ‘chopped and screwed’ version of Prince to bolster his sales well over the 2,500 unit mark. I guess having worked with every major underground artist, producer, and retailer in the Cleveland area does have its privleges. So what can we expect from the future of hip hop? A new album/dvd, Manifest Destiny, along with a compendium Best Of Phoenix Jones Vol. 1, each with chopped and screwed counterparts are all in the works. This time around, Phoenix has built his reputation up so well that even Bizzy Bone’s 7th sign label has seeked him out for collaborations. Fired up and ready to get started for round 2, Phoenix Jones is now in the same position as LeBron James…..ready to bring home a championship to Cleveland
