How did you get that name? The name came from a few friends a kid. The C-A-L are the first three letters in my first name. The Calico is a sub machine gun. The name is synonymous to my technique. I kept it since then. The name only represents the music, nothing else. People always ask, ‘Do You Spit Like A Calico?’ I
What has been your biggest accomplishment? Working on my third solo mixtape but being a part of approximately sixteen or more totally. It’s an at first difficult process because the DJs have to trust your music. The fans have to trust your music. When I say trust, I mean and not take your cd and analyze it. Look at the cover, scan it, scan the songs, read the bio. You know the routine I mean. Now they come to me or if I send a track, it’s no question.
What has been your most difficult challenge? The adaptation between me and the fans. Before I had to observe the songs that the fans loved mostly and understand why. Now I have the attention of many fans while constantly gaining. No matter how much promotion you get, no matter how much money is behind you, the fans make you. If they cant relate, thats a problem. It takes a lot for just one fan to listen. They don’t know who your are. There are rappers like fish in the ocean with hot music. You have to do something to get the attention on you and off that other rapper, or so you will have the primary attention.
What makes you different? It’s my story and how I deliver it. Two musicians may have similar stories, but who will paint the better picture? Who will have the content worth listening to? Delivery is critical and my delivery is standalone.
What projects are you working on? Im working on tracks just about daily that I place on mixtape just about weekly. Im currently working on the ‘Mad Cal Disease Mixtape.’ Hosted by Small World of DTP (and probably DJ Flipcyide or G-Unit/Baymacc). The mixtape is done but Im waiting on finishing touches. I’m aso working on my next mixtape ‘GrindTime Volume II.’
Where are you from originally? I’ve been in DC for about 21 years. I was actually born in West Philly though.
How Long have you been making music? I’ve been making music for well over 10 years.
What artists inspire you? These are a few of the many artist that inspire me. I’d have to say every artist I’ve ever listened to inspired me in some form or fashion.
East: Rakim, RZA, Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane
West: Cube, ICE-T, Lynch Hung, Dre/Snoop
South: Outkast, Witchdoctor, Scarface, UGK
Midwest: Tech9ne, Crucial Conflict, Do Or Die, Da Brat
How would you define your style of music? It’s raw, lyrically-filling. East Coast Hip Hop!
What teams are you affiliated with? I’ve worked with a lot of people, but not formally affiliated with any of them. There’s no I in team, but I once heard ICE-T say if you can do a full album yourself, do it. I’m willing to work with anyone hungry though.
Who are some artists that you have worked with? : I’ve worked with hundreds locally.
In addition, COMP (Def Jam), Chyna Whyte (BME), Dreams (106th N Park), Dino West (No Limit), DJ Kool, LATE (South Park Coalition) and more.
Just about anybody. Especially people I didn’t think could blend with to see how it blends. I hear songs that are predictable. If I hear a Plies track, I will expect Rick Ross, Wayne or so to be on it. That’s usually the case. I want to collab wth the artists you’d never expect.
Where do you see the future of music? On top!
Where do you see yourself in 1 year? Definitely further than I was the year before. I can’t forecast that one, but Im hoping to be everywhere you turn. Magazines, radio, internet, cd players, etc. Im here to stay.
Describe yourself in one word: Hungry!
Any shout outs? Shouts to everyone paying attention to CALICO! I truly appreciate the support.
