This issue Rant & Rave had a chance to catch up with Electro funk favorite & everyone’s homie, DJ Fixx.
HC: How would you describe your musical style?
Fixx: I like to call it “Nu-Funk”, which by my definition describes taking elements that I love from Nu Skool and combining them with funky “Florida” style samples and vocals. In my opinion, this is the best of both worlds. It appeals to both the male and female listeners. I also use tons of b-boy snips and samples to give it a hip-hop edge.
HC: How many 12′ records have you produced?
Fixx: To date around 160
HC: What keeps you motivated and inspired?
Fixx: The biggest thing is probably listening to fellow producers and studying how they are making their tracks. I am always trying to better myself when it comes to production and I am constantly trying to learn new tricks to beef up my tunes.
HC: What are some of the perks of being a well known DJ/Producer?
Fixx: I like making people happy. I am a very shy person and I think my other side comes out in my breaks. Some of the messages I get on-line from fans are very moving. From women telling me that their 4 year old loves my music to the military DJ that is overseas and needs tunes to get him by. That is awesome. Period.
HC: We are dying to know… what’s your craziest groupie story or situation you witnessed on tour?
Fixx: I once had a guy tell me I could date his girlfriend if I wanted to. They were both down with it. It was hilarious.
HC: How do you feel about the ANTI-RAVE BAN laws in some cities, and have they affected you?
Fixx: They have definitely affected areas everywhere. A lot of cities have to close earlier or have to use shi**ier venues. The worst way it has affected me is the countless times that the parties have been shut down early before I even got to play.
HC: What’s your motto?
Fixx: “Don’t hit me with that glow stick string thing please”
HC: Do you still see a lot of drugs in the business or have some of the laws cleaned up the raves & clubs?
Fixx: Most def…drugs are totally not over-saturating the rave scene anymore, at least not in most cities. I think that trend comes and goes in waves. The thing that sucks now is the rave laws mostly went into effect back when drugs were all over the place and that is hurting us now when it is cleaned up.
HC: What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned in this business?
Fixx: To try and stay focused on being professional. It’s hard not to get caught up in the club scene when you are in it all the time. This has hurt me in the past and I try to learn from it and be on-point all the time.
HC: What words of wisdom do you have for up and coming producers in the biz?
Fixx: Create your own style. Don’t be stereo-typical and make what is hot. Make whatever the f**k you want to. I’d like to try to tell DJ’s to stop getting discouraged about the MP3 era. There are pros and cons to digital media and you have to keep an open mind about it. If we do not change with the times, we will get nowhere.
