DJ Slique

“…just to see who was listening and to see who my enemies were”

DJ Slique aka Machine Gun Kelly, has been an urban DJ for 17 years. Slique started out DJing clubs in 1993 and has had many club nights in Orlando through out the years and retired from the club scene in 1997. In 1995 Slique started recording professional sessions for local talent as well as producing and engineering. With a ton of music industry experience Slique decided to go to the world famous Full Sail (school of recording arts) for recording engineering. After a year of hard work Slique graduated in 2000 and started working for Clear Channel Communications immediately. Shortly after  starting  at Clear Channel,  Slique was contacted for a position at Promo Only as a full time audio engineer. Since starting with Promo Only Slique has worked on numerous projects ranging from the Orlando Magic to his current project The MTV2 Monster Mix which airs Mon-Fri from 4-5 on MTV2. Slique titled himself  “ Tha Mixtape King of Orlando” since making his first mixtape in 1992 and was nominated two years in a row by the Orlando Source for “Best Mixtape DJ”. Slique had went on to start a local station 92 Blaze (92.7fm) in Orlando that was a big outlet for local artists that were looking to get music played over the air waves and was broadcasting for two years before retiring from the airwaves. Currently Slique has entered back into the club scene and is rocking parties all over the “O”. Catch Slique live on the radio mixing live on 95.3 every Sunday night at 9pm on The Sunday Night Power Mixtape! He also has 2 resident club nights in Downtown Orlando at Club Cairo and The Backroom.

As for recollecting the past to present, we asked Slique to tell us in his own words a little about himself.
“I first started buying records in 1988 knowing that I had wanted to start DJing so after a couple of years of buying records and equipment I finally got started DJing in 1990.  Being too young to get into clubs and parties I perfected my skills in the bedroom with many nights of long mixing sessions.  After getting some skills under my belt I made my way out to the party scene. After getting some attention mixing in clubs I wanted to bring that experience to people at home, that’s when I made my first mixtape in 1993.  Ever since then I have dropped hundreds of mixtapes and still continue to release mixtapes every month or so. The mixtape game is kind of fucked up right now and has been over the past 5yrs or so with the invention of the “computer DJ” lol. You got guys calling themselves DJ’s just because they put a compilation of songs on a CD? I started giving myself  “Tha Best In Tha 407” title in 1998 just because of the simple fact that nobody could touch my mixing skills and hey, I knew that I was the best! I had people biting my style for years and trying to do the things I was doing so that just confirmed it. From 2001-2004 I dropped at least one mixtape a month if not two mixtapes and this output of mixtapes made people start calling me the “Mixtape King”. Not only was it for the amount of mixtapes I was putting out but it was the exclusive tracks, mixing & remixing that made the CD’s so special. So after a while I decided to start shouting out “The Mixtape King of Orlando” DJ Slique,” just to see who was listening and to see who my enemies were. It took a while for the hate to start but sure enough it started coming around, this made me say it more “The Mixtape KING!” I guess the whole “king” thing can be left for the bottom feeders to fight over. All I know is that I mix and host mixtapes every week, I’m in the studio mon-fri every week mixing and mastering. I’m in the clubs every week mixing live for eight plus hours. I’m on the radio every Sunday night mixing live for the people of Orlando. I’ve got some production coming out now that’s nothing but fiya. So let me ask Orlando this… who is the king? If you see him tell’em to holla at “Tha Best in Tha 407” aiiiiiiight!”  To contact DJ Slique & Machine Gun Kelly visit –  myspace.com/djslique
