Interview With Death Row Records R&B Singer Jewell

DATZHOTT.COM Interview with Death Row Records R&B singer Jewell.

DatzHott.com: How did you start in music?

Jewell: Like most great singers who start in the church, I started singing when I was in the Church, in Chicago, then I moved to LA when I was 10 years old. There were various programs like K-Day, so I got into performing with them and I met the Dream Team, which was an old school group. I did some songs with them. I was into School, and as I got older I ran into Dr. Dre, he was with Ruthless Records at the time. I ended up going to the studio and recording on the N* For Life album.

DatzHott.com: How was your relationship with Dr Dre?

Jewell: He recognised by talent, and after doing the N* For Life album, they did a big Ruthless Tour and we kind of lost contact after that. Because when your as big as Dr. Dre, your numbers keep changing. I ended up running back into him several years later, when he partnered with Suge Knight, and they were starting a record label. I ended up being a first artist on what was an un-named label at the time, until they came up with the name Death Row Records. The rest is pretty much history.

DatzHott.com: How does it feel to finally have your album released on the Death Row label?

Jewell: Well, it hasn’t been released yet, but it sort of feels the same because a lot of things haven’t been handled yet. I hope it’s not going to be a Death Row part. 2 but my album is coming out on WIDEawake, they are the company that bought the catalogue. Me on a personal note, I was asked by my brother to come and join as the vice president of our own label, which is Best Hand Entertainment. I did a book, that’s coming out under Best Hand Publishing, with a Soundtrack called My Blood, My Sweat, My Tears.

DatzHott.com: Whats the book about?

Jewell: There’s several commercials, which you can get an idea what the book is about. It’s about my life, working with a notorious label and Gangsta Rappers, relationships, so there is some domestic violence stuff, some of the bad choices that I have made in my life. I’m hoping that the book will help people, more than hurt people.

DatzHott.com: How was it working with 2Pac?

Jewell: For me it was fun, we were the same personalities, though he was a lot more political. He had a great work ethic; he could do numerous songs back to back, which is the same kind of work ethic as myself. We had a good time, it was fun for me.

DatzHott.com: How do you feel music has changed?

Jewell: There’s not a lot of substance in music anymore, to me that’s how I feel it’s changed. People aren’t really supporting the artists anymore. Now people are downloading, instead of buying CD’s.

DatzHott.com: Is there anything you would like to tell people?

Jewell: Yes. First of all I would like to say that, losing 2Pac was a major loss, not only for the west coast and east coast, but for the whole world. As well as Nate Dogg, and a lot of people know the issues with Death Row and Suge not paying people. When Nate passed, he wasn’t financially stable, and he have children, so I want to say big ups to Snoop Dogg because he’s started a trust fund for Nate, called the Nate Dogg Memorial Trust Fund, you can make donations at www.SnoopDogg.com. He’s also started up trust funds for his kids, you can make a donation to that at BlackCelebKids.com. Also for the relationships that ive been in, thayt I talk about in the book, I have joined forces with the Hopes and Dreams foundation, the founder of Arjia Landgon out of Compton, CA. She is helping to stop abuse against battered women, you can give to that foundation at www.HADFound.org. I also want to send a special thanks to my Best Hand family, Big Russ, Bobby Seale, and Piccasso. Also to 2SPR Marketing and Scott C Shephard, they did a lot of media coverage for me, they are my personal publicists. Also to Miles Dixon and Melissa Tablet out of Detroit. Just let everyone know we need to support each other, a legacy is not what you have, it’s what you leave behind.
