Jacob The Producer
How did you get that name?
It’s actually a mistake. I went through a gang of producer names with different crews I have worked with, but then I needed to set up a Myspace I thought, ‘this will work for now. I’ll just change it later.’ Well, it kind of stuck and people think it’s funny like Jacob The Jewler. I sort of hate it, but people recognize that it’s synonomous with quality music, so it sticks. Maybe I’ll pull a Prince if I ever get really famous and just confuse everyone.
What has been your biggest accomplishment?
Being asked by Green Lantern to produce for his Myspace Invasion mixtape with one of his artists. The guy has produced for everyone and DJed for everyone so it made me feel as if something I am doing is translating which is nice. Because producing in your bedroom sucks.
What has been your most difficult challenge?
Trying to get the elusive major label single. Because so few albums are released by the majors anymore it’s hard to get that massive release that you could just five years ago. I think it’s on it’s way though.
What makes you different?
I am trained in blues, jazz, and classical. I play three instruments and can read music. My sound is cinematic and futuristic, but it has elements of the blues in my phrasings. I incorporate turn arounds and chord changes that other producers don’t touch. On top of it all my tracks bang. You can play them in a club, out of the 12s in the trunk, or quietly in your room as the day ends. I think I’m different because I approach everything from a reactionary standpoint. How will my beats make someone feel is important because if you don’t excite the audience you don’t do your job well.
What projects are you working on?
I have the Green Lantern stuff coming out this month and I have an experimental project with New Jersey MC, F.A.M.E. which is going to change perceptions of hip hop. It’s intelligent and radio-friendly. As it is right now, we’re doing a six song EP which will act as a short story. It will have a rise and fall, conflict and resolution, and character development. On top of that, you can play it on the radio. Finally the backpackers and the top 40 people can come together.
Where can we hear your stuff?
The freshest beats are always posted on my myspace (www.myspace.com/jacobtheproducer). You can hear completed songs on http://www.trucity.tv, and on the Tru City Records Myspace (www.myspace.com/trucitymusic). Also on DJ Green Lantern’s Monstermash2 (I produced the leadoff track with his MC Qadir) which is a free download on my page, and on the forthcoming Green Lantern Myspace Invasion4 which will be available for free download and will be passed out at the Rock The Bells Tour. And, after a recent meeting, hopefully on some new releases by Poe Boy Records with either Flo-Rida, Brisco, or Rick Ross.
